VETC'S CLUB HISTORY

Major ​Milestones in the History of the Club

  • On January 29, 2007 VETC held a demonstration meeting

  • On August 16, 2007 VETC was officially chartered

  • On September 19, 2007 VETC held its first Humorous Speech and Table Topics contest

  • On October 22, 2007 VETC’s Charter Ceremony Meeting was held at the Terminal City Club and was attended by 86 members and guests, including Jimmy Pattison

  • On February 20, 2008 www.vetc.ca was launched

  • On March 12, 2008 VETC held its first International Speech and Evaluation Contest

  • On June 10, 2009 VETC’s membership growth forced a move to its current meeting venue at 300-755 Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver

  • On September 16, 2009 VETC holds its annual humorous speech and table topics contest. These were won by Darren Frew and Roger Killen respectively. Gilbert Lam was the contest chair.

  • September 26, 2009 VETC holds its first ever picnic. The venue was Queen Elizabeth Park.

  • October 3, 2009 Darren Frew came second in the Area 24 Humorous Speech Contest.

  • December 4, 2009 Darren Frew (President) hosted VETC’s second Christmas party.

  • January 1, 2010 New executive team takes over: Roger Killen, Darren Frew, Ling Li, Awaneesh Shatmanyu, Aries Suswendi, Jaime Weise, Colin Hamilton and Hanna Golota.

  • February 10, 2010 Awaneesh Shatmanyu was replaced by Lily Zou as Secretary.

  • March 10, 2010 Darren Frew won the club International Speech contest and Roger Killen won the Evaluation contest.

  • April 3, 2010    VETC hosted the Area 24 International Speech Contest; neither Darren Frew nor Roger Killen won the Area contest

  • May 12, 2010    VETC elected it’s July 1-December 30, 2010 Executive Team.

  • May 19, 2010    VETC held its first Strategic Planning meeting.

  • On June 2, 2010 VETC restricted its future members to entrepreneurs only

  • On June 30, 2010 Toastmasters International awarded VETC the status of President’s Distinguished Club – the highest possible club ranking in the Toastmasters world.

  • July 1, 2010 New executive team takes over: Aries Suswendi, Darren Frew, Lily Zou, Amin Palizban, Julius Makarewicz, Harvey Martens, Gordon Walter, Emre Akkas and Roger Killen.

  • July 1, 2010    3 VETC members assume Area, Division or District roles: Roger Killen became the Area 24 Governor, Darren Frew became the Division K Governor and the District 21 Public Relations Officer, and Hanna Phan became the District 21 Newsletter Coordinator

  • Sept. 15, 2010    VETC held its annual Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest. The Contest Chair was Francisca Velazquez. The winner of the Humorous speech Contest was Aries Suswendi. Harvey Martens won the Table Topics Contest.

  • Sept. 24, 2010    At the Area 24 Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest, VETC’s representatives were placed second in both categories.

  • December 3, 2010 VETC held a potluck Christmas party; the hostess was Stacey Nguyen and the pianist and song leader was Heather Pattullo.

  • January 1, 2011 New executive team takes over: Darren Frew, Connie McElman and Heather Pattullo, Galya Westler and Jimmy Ho, Gordon Walter, Iman Aghay, Josef Otto, Stacey Nguyen and Aries Suswendi.

  • July 1, 2011 New executive team takes over: Darren Frew, Connie McElman and Heather Pattullo, Iman Aghay, Dev Manning, Andriy Ostapyshyn, Howard Ma, Suzanne Vaudrin and Nazanin Mobrhan-Shafiee.

  • September 14, 2011 The Club Humorous Speech Contest was won by Josef Otto and the Table Topics Contest was won by John Arntsen; Josef Otto went on to win the Area 24 Contest on October 1 but was knocked out in the Division B contest.

  • November 30, 2011    New executive team acclaimed for the January 1 to June 30, 2012 term: Darren Frew, Karen Zhang, Alan Chu, Howard Ma, Andriy Ostapyshyn, Nazanin Mobrhan-Shafiee, Christian Maas and Joseph Lo.

  • May 23, 2012    New executive team acclaimed for the July 1 to December 31, 2012 term: Christian Maas (President), Karen Zhang (VP Education), Howard Ma (VP PR), Ale Estrada (VP Membership), Joseph Lo (Secretary), Raj Thobhani (Treasurer), Ehren Richardson (Sergeant at Arms), Dev Manning (Webmaster).

  • July 1, 2012 Club achieved special award from Toastmasters International for achieving 20% growth within 2 months.

  • January 2015    VETC continues to provide a professional learning environment for many aspiring entrepreneurs. "Presidents Distinguished Club" status for two years running.
